PRÉSENCES EN DIALOGUE

Site-specific solos from the École de danse contemporaine de Montréal

March 3rd, 2026 – As part of their training in performance, graduating students from the École de danse contemporaine de Montréal (EDCM) create and perform solos designed specifically for a particular location. Thanks to a collaboration between the EDCM and Danse Danse, these creations take shape in the lobby and nooks and crannies of Théâtre Maisonneuve.
Each performer chooses a specific location (staircase, bay window, threshold, corner, or circulation area) and composes with the particularities of the space: architecture, existing lighting, surfaces, acoustics, rhythm of the place, and proximity to the audience. Here, the venue is not just a backdrop, but a true creative partner.
The audience will be able to discover the young performers’ solos on Saturday, April 4, 2026, at 3 p.m. and 8 p.m., before and after Manifesto, a performance by Stephanie Lake Company.

Educational objectives

The project allows graduating students to demonstrate agency by applying their interpretation and composition skills, making clear artistic choices, and adapting to a variety of performance conditions.
Graduating students are encouraged to embrace their artistic autonomy and ability to develop a personal approach. The project also aims to develop their sense of adaptation and composition outside the traditional stage by creating a work in direct dialogue with a real place. Thus, by investing in different spaces, performers have the opportunity to explore a renewed relationship with the audience, where proximity, gaze, and circulation become an integral part of the experience.
