L'École de danse contemporaine de Montréal announces the retirement of Ms. Tassy Teekman, Assistant to the Artistic and Program Director, and Rehearsal Director for second year students. Tassy Teekman has held several positions in the institution since 1996.
"We would like to acknowledge the exemplary investment demonstrated by Ms. Tassy Teekman at the Ecole de danse contemporaine de Montréal. She's retiring after 23 years of commitment, rigor, precision, discipline and artistic work with young dancers, with a great concern for equity", says Lucie Boissinot, Artistic & Program Director.
Since 1996, Tassy Teekman has devoted herself to training the next generation of contemporary dancers at the École de danse contemporaine de Montréal, sharing her knowledge and experience accumulated over her 30 year career as a dancer, teacher and choreographer. For 10 years, she was a member of the dance company Le Groupe de la Place Royale, which was one of the most innovative dance companies in Canada. While a member of the company she participated in the creation of more than 40 original works and made her début as a choreographer and teacher. She relocated to Montreal in 1985 in order to pursue her career as an independent dance artist.
Upon arriving in Montreal she reconnected with the renowned choreographer Jean-Pierre Perreault with whom she had worked while a member of Le Groupe de la Place Royale. Throughout her twenty year career as a performing artist she danced in over 20 of his creations and events. In order to realize her own choreographic projects, she founded her company, Danse Tassy Teekman, and created over 20 works which she presented both in Quebec, her chosen home, as well as across Canada.
Throughout her career, Tassy Teekman has shared her knowledge and passion for the art form with professional dancers, young dancers committed to pursuing dance careers, as well as the public. In 1986, she began teaching at the École de danse contemporaine de Montréal (then known as Les Ateliers de danse moderne de Montréal Inc. LADMMI) where she assumed the role of Artistic Director from 1996-2003. Since 2004, Tassy Teekman has pursued her dedication to dance education as Adjointe à la direction artistique et des études. For many years Tassy Teekman has also been the rehearsal director of the 2nd year students, a role that is close to her heart.
"After 24 years as a full time staff member at EDCM and over 30 years of a professional affiliation with the school, I would like to thank all my colleagues for the exchanges we have had regarding their views for the ongoing development of dance education. I would like to thank the students who have challenged my perceptions, shared their dreams for themselves and dance, all of which made me a better teacher and rehearsal director. You have all inspired me and enriched my professional and personal life. Of course I will miss you all, but I am also looking forward to discovering new sources of inspiration. The school has been in constant transformation since I began working here so many years ago. This transformation is what makes the school such a unique, vital and innovative institution. While I will be observing from the sidelines, I can’t wait to see how EDCM continues to evolve and where the educational vision of its directors will lead. I wish you all the best in your future endeavours", says Tassy Teekman.
Karine Lelacheur Titley, school organization Technician, will be responsible for some of her tasks. The EDCM team wishes the best toTassy in her new chapter of life.
