Sébastien Provencher
ChorégrapheSébastien Provencher is a Montreal-based dance artist and a graduate of the Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM). For several years, he has developed a choreographic practice focused on interdisciplinary practice and a performative approach to movement, favoring intimicy and close relationship with the audience. His work explores queerness, ecosomatics, homoeroticism, and power dynamics. Eager to challenge hierarchies, he prioritizes collaborative creation processes and views the performing arts as an act of resistance and a tool for sociopolitical engagement. Though he began dancing relatively late, Provencher quickly distinguished himself as both a choreographer and performer through the excellence of his work. In 2015, he received the Audience Award at the Quartiers Danses Festival for Children of Chemistry, his second full-length work, which examines hypermasculinity by playing with gender codes and homoeroticism in the world of sports. He later created several public space iterations of the piece, an experience that strengthened his belief in the political power of art when presented outside traditional venues. Today, his in situ work holds a significant place in his research, as seen in Floreus, inspired by visual artist Zachari Logan and presented at the Cité des hospitalières during FTA 2024. Provencher is also co-artistic director, alongside Priscilla Guy, of FURIES, a contemporary dance festival in Marsoui, in the Haute-Gaspésie region. Since 2020, he has been an artist member of Lorganisme, a mutualization structure for independent choreographers. |
