WHEN DANCE BECOMES A COMMON LANGUAGE
March 17th, 2026 – The École de danse contemporaine de Montréal (EDCM) and the community organisation PROMIS are pleased to announce the development of an artistic and community-focused project resulting from their partnership. Aimed at participants in the Montreal-based organization’s French language learning groups—which support immigrants and refugees on their path to integration—this project is designed as a space for connection, expression, and creation. It explores contemporary dance as a universal language, accessible to all, that allows for expression beyond words. This artistic and human adventure is led by Michelle Lucero Moris, an artist and graduate of the EDCM. Originally from Chile and having experienced migration herself, the artist will guide the group through a process of collective creation, inspired by the participants’ experiences, hopes, and cultural discoveries. Through movement, participants are invited to share their journeys and their worldview, while building their confidence and sense of belonging to the Montreal community. Scheduled for winter 2026, the project consists of a series of workshops that will culminate in an informal public performance. This performance will allow participants to share their creation with their relatives and the community, while celebrating the richness of their individual journeys and the strength of the collective, particularly through outreach. “Through this partnership with PROMIS, the École de danse contemporaine de Montréal is committed to projects rooted in Montreal’s social and cultural reality. It affirms its commitment to making dance accessible and recognizing the power of movement as a tool for dialogue, inclusion, and social transformation,” emphasizes Yves Rocray, Executive Director of the EDCM. “PROMIS is proud to partner with the École de danse contemporaine de Montréal to include contemporary dance in its cultural programming for immigrants as an important and essential vehicle for integration. This initiative will allow dance to play a significant role as a tool for expression and intercultural connection among our students in French language training,” says Aida Berberovic, Director of Programs and Services at PROMIS.
