LES DANSES CROISÉES
L’École de danse contemporaine de Montréal presents Les danses à deux temps, featuring its first- and second-year dancers, under the direction of Lisa Davies. On this occasion, the young dancers will perform original creations by Manuel Roque and Ethan Colangelo, as well as a piece from Christopher House‘s repertoire.
Vena Cava by Christopher House
Vena Cava was created for Toronto Dance Theatre in 1998. Originally danced by an ensemble of twelve, this iteration for EDCM has been modified to include up to twenty performers. The choreography creates a fast-paced, architectural counterpoint to the driving rhythms and textures of Robert Moran’s Open Veins. The movement patterns of Vena Cava are built on speed, quick changes of direction and complex musicality– its choreographic structures only come to life through the dancers’ full-blooded commitment to collective community action.
Summertime by Manuel Roque
“It’s cold out there,” sings Brigitte F. “It’s dark out there, a little darker than usual, isn’t it? I was craving a little warmth. Shared warmth. To share a space where our collective discouragement could be re-energized, our anger transformed into a quiet strength—a little more joyful, a little more contagious.” May the act of resistance find its place in a delicate balance between tension, release, lucidity, and pleasure. This dance of joy, propelled by the fervor of Vivaldi’s Summer, is meant to be a humble springboard toward brighter days, a collective momentum to keep moving forward.
Evasion by Ethan Colangelo
Evasion explores escapism and the spaces we inhabit to step outside of reality. Within these shifting internal landscapes, contrasting states—anxiety, euphoria, and meditation—coexist in the body, colliding and intertwining. The work examines how these sensations overlap, creating tension between chaos and stillness, disorientation and clarity. Rather than resolving, these ideas accumulate, revealing a body suspended between tension and release.
